Neuropathy pain can be painful, but it doesn’t have to be a jail sentence or a handicap. There a many treatment plans out there of course, but you yourself can start helping treat yourself right now! Here are some tips and guides of how you can make a big impact on your neuropathy pain.
Time to change your lifestyle!
We are all guilty of having some unhealthy habits, but if you are a sufferer of neuropathy you can’t afford to. Making lifestyle changes can have a positive impact on your symptoms and improve your chances of finding relief. If cigarettes, cigars, or alcohol are a part of your daily life, this might be a good time to break up with them!
Adopt a healthy diet!
Suprise, suprise! You are what you eat! Adopting a healthy diet and nutrition plan can most certainly help alleviate or lessen your neuropathy pain. Having well-balanced meals including foods high in B12 in your diet, such as poultry, fish, lean meat, eggs, and fortified cereals is a good start! Some people have gone as far as switching over to a plant-based diet. I would always recommend consulting a doctor before making any drastic nutritional changes.
Exercise regularly!
To be a ready to fight neuropathy you must stay strong! Damaged nerves and numbness can alter your gate, which increases your risk of a fall and injury. Range of motion exercises can help stimulate nerve conduction and circulation to affected areas. These exercises are performed at the joints. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, low Impact exercises like walking, stationary bike, and swimming can help increase circulation, muscle strength, and coordination. Toe tapping exercises can greatly help with coordination and joint manipulation. Sitting leg pointer exercises are also great low impact movements to use. They are as simple as sitting in a chair, lifting your right foot off the floor, and straightening your right knee at the same time. Point your toes and roll your ankle around clockwise and then counterclockwise a few times.
Find a support group!
Experiencing an illness or a condition can feel isolating at times, but it doesn’t have to be. There are over 42 million people suffering from peripheral neuropathy, so you are most certainly not alone. Neuropathy is like having an invisible injury that can make simple day to day activities so painful, but many people won’t understand because on the outside you look fine. Many of us have gotten very good at faking it! It is nice to be able to talk to someone who is going through or has gone through your similar situation. Support groups can be a great way to educate yourself on tips and first hand reviews on neuropathy treatments. Especially in today’s technological age, you can be in multiple groups, find access to thousands of people in your same situation, and never have to leave you home. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy at www.foundationforpn.org can refer you to a local support group. Facebook is also a wonderful outlet to find a support group that is right for you.
